Developing Leaders Through the Lessons Life Gives Us


The below defines how I intend to live my life. Every day my first task at work is to read this. It keeps me focused.

HOW – The people I work with can expect me to provide the following: 

  1. Clear, constant and welcome communication, both horizontal and vertical
  2. An understandable purpose that ties to an understandable vision
  3. Clear goals without step by step directions
  4. A good reason 

What – There are five characteristics that my coworkers will see in me:

  1. Integrity
  2. Professionalism
  3. Vision
  4. Selflessness
  5. Trustworthiness

Why – I will live my life in relentless pursuit of improvement in the principles below:

  1. I will always place my coworkers above myself. I will care enough to correct when needed and to recognize at every opportunity. They will know I care not because of my words but because of the time I invest in their careers. They will be irritated at my constant attempts to get them to read and to think, and this is good.
  2. I will remain true to myself – the same person at work, at home or anywhere else. I am first a student, second a teacher and third a doer of deeds. A student sees everything as a learning opportunity. A teacher sees knowledge as valuable only if it is shared and seeks every opportunity to add value. A doer of deeds accomplishes his objectives.
  3. Everyone will receive my respect until they take action to lose it. Even then, I will hold no grudge.
  4. I will focus relentlessly on making today my masterpiece and on setting conditions for an even greater tomorrow. Yesterday was just a lesson.
  5. I am defined by my goals, not by my failures. There will be times when I miss the mark set forth here. Each time is an opportunity to learn and improve. I will not be defeated.
